I cannot say this with enough emphasis or disdain:
I HATE AMERICAN IDOL.
Since when did watching people who are tone deaf and/or completely delusional become entertainment? These people honestly think that they're fantastic vocalists, and they make my ears bleed. This is not entertaining, it's torture.
There are several things that bother me about this show.
1. The fact that what seems like the entire country is absolutely taken with this show. What is wrong with this? Do people have nothing better to do than to obsess about a horrible reality show? It's EVERYWHERE. I can't get away from it! I hear about it all day at work. Then I go home, and my mother watches it and turns it up, yelling to me "Did you hear that?!" Please, please, please, I'm begging everyone who is so fascinated with this show that they talk about it nonstop - FIND SOMETHING TO DO WITH YOUR TIME!!
2. The fact that people who can't sing, shouldn't sing, and please dear GOD don't let them sing! come out to audition for a show designed to create popstars. Now granted, Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson aren't exactly the most fantastic singers in the world. But at least they can carry a tune. If they sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star it's recognizable as the song, instead of being entirely off. Some of the people that audition on American Idol are completely and totally delusional in thinking that they have any chance of even making it past the first round, much less onto the show. They walk into the room, knowing they're being recorded, and embarass themselves on national television. Then they're surprised when the judges rip them apart and tell them how bad they really are!
3. The Judges. Don't get me wrong - usually I wholeheartedly agree with them when they tell people that they're singing resembles a cat scratching on a blackboard. But sometimes they're just cruel. Especially when it comes to peoples' appearances. When did it become entertaining to watch people tear people down so much? It just seems so negative. Honesty is good, especially when it comes to people who think they have a talent when they don't - but scathing remarks, especially about things such as appearances, are just mean.
4. The show in general. Do we really NEED more popstars in this country? Aren't Britney Spears, Hillary Duff and Ashley Simpson enough? I'm tired of lip syncing poptarts that say they're "talented." I'm sure they have talents - although I'm not sure I want to know what those talents are. Some of them have amazing voices - a la Christina Aguilera. I actually enjoy pop music to an extent. It's one of the largest Genres on my iPod/iTuens. But that's because I have Michael Jackson, Prince and other similar artists labelled as Pop - artists with geniune talent. But seriously, we're popped out already, when is it going to stop?!
